Today is Mother’s Day – a day when moms all over the country are honored with gestures of appreciation and love. The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She then began a campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States. Jarvis’ holiday eventually was adopted by the US and other countries all over the world. In this tradition, each person offers a gift, card, or remembrance toward their mothers, grandmothers, and/ or maternal figure on mother’s day.

And right they are to recognize these often unsung heroes. After all, it’s impossible to exist without first spending close to thirty six weeks in the womb of one of the women who’s legacy this post, and day celebrates! And commonly this time in the womb is only the beginning. Personally speaking, my own mother Peggy has been supporting almost my every major decision since I opened my eyes for the first time in 1983. Heck, she’s even supported me through some of the bad ones… not out of error, but out of love and a knowledge that sometimes you gotta learn it on your own. So this is for you mom – and for all the other ones out there! I love you, and so do all of us at YAFCA! Thanks for all you do to make the world a brighter, better place.

Welcome to this week’s YAFCAst! Our special guest this week is Andrew Ponti, the executive director of the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society. From starting out as a crewman on the Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat to his current role as executive director, Andrew is a wealth of knowledge.

This is particularly good when the person conducting the interview (me!) has that burning question: What does a riverboat and riverboat cruises have to do with non-profits and charities? The answer? A lot. In today’s part 1 of our interview with Andrew, he tells us a bit of the history behind the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society and their work as a non-profit organization. In the forthcoming installments of our interview, Andrew will talk about upcoming events including the first Pride of the Susquehanna cruise of the season…Mother’s Day! You can find out more about HARS and the Pride of the Susquehanna here: http://harrisburgriverboat.com. In the meantime, heeeeeeeere’s Andrew Ponti!
